6 Great Reasons to Attend Gala 6

Design Museum Portland Gala 6 is all about exploring design through the senses. From delectable cuisine to design-infused sensory experiences, we’ve picked the top 6 reasons why the Gala will stimulate all your senses—including your sense of design.

1. Event Headliners

Gala 6 will be hosting not just one, but two leading Nike design innovators. Larry Rodgers, Senior Director for Nike House of Innovation, will be the evening’s emcee and is sure to be the life of the party. Desmond Marzette, Senior Global Director of Advertising at Nike, Jordan brand, will be sharing his incredible story on how his passion for hip-hop and pop culture taught him to be a skilled designer. Larry and Des are sure to make the night unforgettable.

2. Design Impact Poster Showcase

In collaboration with some of the city’s best designers, we are premiering a series of posters representing our design impact areas. Each poster represents a different artist’s or team of artists’ interpretation of what their particular impact area means to them. From play to healthcare to data visualization, our impact areas demonstrate the far-reaching, transformational power of design. These posters are extremely limited edition—they will only be printed once, are numbered and hand-signed by the artists, and available for purchase one night only.

3. Multi-Sensory Experiences

Guests will explore their senses through custom-created experiences that infuse design into smell, touch, sight, taste, and sound. We’re hosting a night filled with aromatic, mouth-watering food and drinks, an electrifying audio and visual music installation by CymaSpace, a hands-on block printing experience with DIY bar, a virtual tour of Portland neighborhoods, landmarks, and Design Museum’s pop up locations, among other stimulating adventures.

4. Culinary and Beverage Exploration

Portland is home to some of the most creative food and drink professionals in the world and Gala 6 will be a showcase of some of these talents. Our multi-course dinner will include delectable cuisine from Nodoguro, Han Oak, The Hoxton’s Lovely Rita, and other talented chefs bringing their talents to the Gala 6 table.

Drinks will also be a highlight of the evening with a wide selection of tea, wine, beer, and more from Bull Run Distillery, Aria Gin, LABrewatory, Ecliptic, and Stormbreaker. And let’s not forget about dessert! Commissary Cafe will be providing an exquisite dessert experience and Portland icon Salt & Straw is mixing up a special batch of signature Design Museum-inspired ice cream just for us.

5. Gala Social

The party doesn’t stop after dinner! The celebration will continue with cocktails, delicious dessert, a silent auction, additional sensory experiences, and of course, dancing. Explore the space, take in the views, and boogie with the who’s who of the Portland design community.

This year’s silent auction is filled with an amazing, curated selection of items and experiences from a wide variety of artists, brands, and businesses. From a Herman Miller cuckoo clock to custom, one-of-a-kind art pieces, we’ve chosen to partner with an exclusive roster of Portland design partners. Other items include a custom Design Museum wallet from our friends at Woolly Made, a luxurious rug from our neighbors at Kush, a variety of Portland-exclusive events and experiences, and even a bench from our Street Seats exhibition, a truly unique item for the most devoted Design Museum fan.

6. Design community

And speaking of community, it’s important to remember that we’re not just celebrating design, but celebrating the people that make Portland a hub for creative and innovative expression. Gala 6 will be populated with your fellow design enthusiasts from the allied design industries, including Killian Pacific, Weiden + Kennedy, BRIC Architecture, LUMA Institute, JE Dunn, Hacker Architects, Workplace Resources of Oregon, PAE Engineers, Luma Lighting, Opsis Architecture, Lease Crutcher Lewis, Zidell, Lango Hansen, Think Joule, and XPLANE, who are making it possible to celebrate another year of educating about the power and impact of design.
