About the Speakers
Melissa Chan • Design Director, The Wild
Melissa Chan has been designing interactive experiences for 14 years—her interests lie at the intersection of people and products. With a passion for emerging technologies and practical applications of them, she’s now leading design efforts at XR startup The Wild, overseeing user experience and creative in product, brand, and marketing. When she’s not working, she’s spending time outdoors with her husband and son.
Wesley Hare • Product Designer, Evolve Collaborative
Wes Hare is a product designer at Evolve Collaborative, a Portland-based agency with a human-centered and insight-driven approach. At Evolve, Wes finds deep satisfaction in balancing visual as well as functional problem solving. With a background in graphic design and a master’s degree in product design, Wes often plays a jack-of-all trades roll, but has the most fun while sketching, talking, and playing the ‘Yes and…” game with a pen and paper. When he’s not crafting product stories, Wes likes to spend his time on the water, either racing canoes with the local outrigger clubs or chasing waves on the Oregon coast.
Valarie Šakota • Co-founder + Chief Creative Officer, BARBARI
Valarie Sakota is the co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of BARBARI, a cannabis lifestyle brand focused on mindful dosing. Valarie built her career in advertising, working on brand development ranging from conceptualization to execution of global campaign strategy, brand activations, and content creation. Her roster of clients includes Adidas, Google, Umpqua Bank, Barre3, Puma, and her work with Netflix recently earned an Emmy nomination. Despite enjoying a successful career, at the start of 2019, Valarie transitioned out of advertising to focus on scaling BARBARI’s reach. Leading the company’s brand strategy and product development, her products are available nationally, earning recognition in publications including Condé Nast Traveler, Popsugar, Willamette Week, HBFIT, Bridal Musings, Forbes and Coveteur Magazine. Through BARBARI, Valarie is working to expand the accessibility of cannabis and advocate for a more equitable industry for women, POC, and LGBTQ folks.
Taylor Valdés • Owner + Founder, The Venderia
Taylor Valdés is an artist and vending machine innovator. Owner and founder of The Venderia, a collection of unusual vending machines operating in the Portland area, and Vending Magic, an online resource for creative vending entrepreneurs and wholesaler of vending-specific products, Taylor delights in making the mundane majestic. She is inspired by the excess of American culture, all things cheap and plentiful, and games kids played during study hall in the pre-cell phone era.
Maria Lalli • VP of Product Design and Development, Ceek Women’s Health
Maria is a designer working for the past fifteen years to improve peoples’ experiences with things. As VP of Product Design and Development for Ceek Women’s Health, she believes good design can make healthcare simpler, more empathetic and more effective. Her background in design consulting spans a wide-range of industries, including consumer electronics, packaged goods, housewares and appliances. She has designed innovative products and strategic design languages in collaboration with a diverse range of clients, from startups to Fortune 100, including Duracell, Toshiba, Honeywell, Clorox, Graco, Panasonic and Procter & Gamble.
Prior to joining Ceek, Maria was a design lead at Ziba Design in Portland and product designer at IA Collaborative and Insight Product Development in Chicago. Maria has a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design from the University of Cincinnati.

What is Summer Story Hour?
Design is often used to tell a story. Design Museum Portland’s Summer Story Hour offers the opportunity to share tales of creativity and exploration, live and onstage. Each event features a theme and a group of storytellers who share a unique experience adhering to that theme, drawing from the tellers interpretation. Whether it’s a student’s first forays or an established professional’s years of practice, their range of perspectives offer an audience inspiration, commonality, and good fun.
