Many of the spaces we inhabit on a daily basis are complicit in upholding systematic inequalities in our society. With each new addition or expansion project companies have the opportunity to design more inclusive and accessible spaces. How do we approach design through the lens of inclusion to transform products of the past into genuinely equitable spaces?
Join Dr. Steve Nakana, Social Equity Program Manager at Port of Portland, as he discusses different ways Portland International Airport is approaching the integration of equity in their long-term expansion project, PDXNEXT. Announced in 2015, PDXNEXT is an ongoing major development project to ensure PDX can accommodate the needs of a rapidly-growing and internationally-connected world, while remaining true to Portland’s values. Explore how topics such as accessibility, inclusivity, and equity factor in to creating an innovative experience for future generations of travelers and explorers.
About the Speaker
Prior to joining the Port of Portland, Steve worked for Mercy Corps, an international Humanitarian Organization as a Peacebuilding advisor. He holds a PhD in International Studies from the Graduate Institute for International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland, which obtained Summa Cum Laude recognition. He also holds two masters’ degrees in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley, and International Relations from the University of Cape Town in South Africa, as well as numerous traineeships in conflict management and negotiation from organizations and universities including the Harvard University-based Program on Negotiation.

Directions, parking, and accessibility
CENTRL Office Downtown is located at the intersection of SW 12th and Morrison, above Blue Star Donuts.
Parking: Metered street parking is available around the neighborhood. There is also a SmartPark lot on SW 11th and Yamhill. Parking in the SmartPark lot is hourly, and caps at $14/day. From 11th and Yamhill, you’re only a few blocks from CENTRL.
Accessibility: The event is located on the first floor and is ADA-accessible. Restrooms are located on the second floor, with both elevator and staircase access.
