2017 • A Year in Review

December 21, 2017 | | View Comments

Thank you for making 2017 a wonderful year at Design Museum Portland!

What a year it has been! Between brand-new programs, a growing membership base, and a shiny new book, 2017 has been Portland’s biggest year yet. We are elated to have accomplished so much this year, and couldn’t have done it without our members, supporters, and friends.

Here are a few of our favorite highlights from the year:

Design Museum Mornings Launch

In May, we kicked off a monthly breakfast lecture series all about design impact with activist and artist Natalie Sept. Over the course of the year, we covered everything from modular design for the houseless, creative initiatives for a more vibrant city, and the future of AR/VR in these lightning-lectures of design inspiration. Our audience grew from 25 to 80 attendees in just 7 short months, and we continue to bring this powerful program to the city!

Project 360 Premiere

To understand design is to understand the multiple perspectives and influences that drive the best results. That’s why we created Project 360; a unique event that showcases these essential voices in an illustration of a Workplace Innovation case study. We partnered with IOS, IA Interior Architects, and Swinerton Builders to unveil of Portland’s first WELL Building Standard office space under review, hearing perspectives from the designers, the builders, and the end users.

Design & Play Publication

We started an exciting new chapter as an organization – we launched our first book! In June, many of you helped us successfully kickstart Design & Play, a book about design and the importance of outdoor play featuring all the content from our nationally-traveling exhibition, Extraordinary Playscapes. We’re donating copies to the libraries of each city we’ve traveled the exhibition to, and you can get your copy just in time for the holidays!

Membership Growth

We happily welcomed over 70 new members to our Museum family! These individuals and organizations are design enthusiasts, industry leaders, and voices in Portland that are engaged in a positive conversation about how design can impact our community. Members have enjoyed free admission to our events, our quarterly Design Museum Magazine, and members-only receptions and events!

A Look Ahead & Get Involved!

2018 proves to be even more vibrant with one-of-a-kind programming and large-scale impact. In February, we open Bespoke Bodies: The Design & Craft of Prosthetics at the Pacific Northwest College of Art. This the first exhibition of its kind, taking a contemporary look at prosthetic design and patient/designer relationships, and  is our first major exhibition to open in Portland! We’re kicking the year off strong, and stay tuned for more exciting announcements about upcoming programming, exhibitions, and celebrations of design!

Here’s how you can get involved in 2018:

  • Become a Member! Attend our events for free, get our quarterly Design Museum Magazine, and receive invitations to exclusive, members-only receptions and events.
  • Support our next exhibitionBespoke Bodies: The Design & Craft of Prosthetics! You’ll get exclusive opportunities for engagement, including exclusive tours, signed copies of our forthcoming book, and limited edition t-shirts!
