Find inspiration from the profound work of student designers as they create opportunity for people of all abilities with Wilson Smith, Design Director at Nike and Professor at the University of Oregon.
Nike co-founder and U of O track & field coach Bill Bowerman famously stated, “If you have a body, you are an athlete.” His words inspire the work of Nike designers far and wide, as they are met with new challenges to allow unique individuals to exercise their individual strengths in becoming athletes. The world’s elite para-athletes flock to Nike to work with top designers for adaptive design that allows for better, stronger performances, even with the loss or disabled use of a limb.
As one of Nike’s original Design Directors, Wilson Smith is working to pass this powerful torch to the next generation of designers as a professor at the Adaptive Products Enabling Para-Athletic Performance program at the University of Oregon. By utilizing the combined expertise of veterans, trauma victims, and other prosthesis users, Wilson and his students are embarking to design adaptive innovations for athletes of all capabilities. The ingenious projects coming from this Product Design Studio have resulted in the program quickly becoming an academic leading voice for this topic nationally.
“The Adaptive Design studio gives students a real-world look at the product design process. Having access to athletes and receiving their direct, immediate feedback is what leads to a successful final design.” – Wilson Smith
