Learn the unparalleled impact that design can play in the recovery process with Jenn Scholes, Nike designer and member of the Doernbecher Freestyle team.
Join us for September’s Design Museum Mornings!
Keynote Jenn Scholes, senior color designer at Nike, will share her experience as a designer with the Doernbecher Freestyle project and working with patient Kira Smith in 2013.
In the journey to recovery, design can assume a unique role—it’s a mode of storytelling unlike any other that allows one to explore their journey while simultaneously developing a symbol of achievement and progress. Portland is home to one of the most inspirational initiative that embodies this concept of design as a tool for recovery, the Doernbecher Freestyle program. Each year, a handful of patients at Doernbecher Children’s hospital pair with a team of Nike designers and developers to produce the sneakers of their dreams. In “the program that doesn’t say no”, kids see their wildest ideas become reality and emerge confident they can conquer any challenge.
Through Victorian textiles, Alice in Wonderland motifs, and endless inspiration, the Jenn and Kira told the story of Kira’s battle and triumph over OCD on a sneaker that ultimately launched Kira’s now thriving fashion career. Seeing the design through to creation marked a powerful experience for Kira and Jenn alike.
“It all came down to the storytelling. Great stories come from inspiration, and inspiration creates great stories and Kira had one.” – Jenn Scholes
Taking place at Wacom Experience Center the morning of September 22nd, Jenn will explore the impact of design when applied to the healing journey. Complete with breakfast and coffee, this Design Museum Mornings is not to be missed!
Doors open at 8:30 am; Presentation begins at 9:00 am. Breakfast will be served.
