Lost Arts: Pattern Making and Fit Engineering

As technology takes over our daily lives, many traditional methods of design are being discarded to cater to a fast-moving world. Elements of pattern-making training are also being tailored to fit these changing needs, but in doing so, will the industry lose certain methods of traditional craftsmanship and education?
Join veteran pattern-maker and couturier Reyburn Brown, in his studio for an interactive virtual Design Museum LIVE event. This event will teach you the importance of pattern making from beginning to end. Create a production ready pattern, a custom pattern for yourself, and everything in between. You’ll learn the foundations of pattern creation as well as common manipulations to get the perfect fit and better understand why clothes are made to fit the way they do.
Design Museum LIVE is a monthly event series for Design Museum Everywhere members. Each event begins with a way to wake up and engage your design mind, followed by conversations with leading designers, panel discussions, interviews, live streams, or workshops.

Reyburn Brown is a Portland, Oregon- based pattern-maker, couturier, and founder of The Reyburn school of Apparel Pattern Drafting and Draping. He studied fashion and pattern making at ESMOD École Supérieure des Arts et techniques de la mode, the International Fashion Design & Business school in Paris France. His specialty is to drape and pattern unique shapes that are difficult to create by technology alone. Reyburn has over two decades of experience in Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Portland, working for brands such as NIKE, Lululemon, Filson, and Columbia Sportswear. In 2017 he founded The Reyburn School of Apparel Pattern Drafting and Draping, whose mission is to keep the art of apparel pattern drafting and draping alive.
