Urban Hike

The Urban Hike was designed at the Urban Innovation Challenge to inspire exploration between communities. Trail markers will direct visitors on walking tours that connect the surrounding neighborhoods and encourage people to discover existing design, art and culture in Boston.

Fidelity Labs’ “Urban Hike” envisions an immersive experience that will enrich the I-93 overpass area, invigorate the surrounding neighborhoods, and encourage learning and exploration throughout Boston. The concept for their design and program was inspired by trailheads commonly found at rural hiking sites.

After speaking with the community for input and feedback, Fidelity Labs identified the need for their design to engage people with the area and remove the perceived distance and barriers felt when moving throughout the area.

By bringing this concept under the I-93 overpass, the urban trailhead will act as a meeting place for future Urban Hikes. Just like trail markers in the woods, the Urban Hike will provide confidence in exploring new areas, allow participants security in knowing they are on the right path, and introduce moments of delight when discovering each new trail marker. Their final design includes an analogue trailhead directing the community with new walking paths for exploration, while highlighting art, culture, and design around the city.
